What is the difference between a Data Engineer and a Data Scientist? by Elizabeth Mazenko

Answer by Elizabeth Mazenko:

A large difference between a Data Engineer and a Data Scientist is the end objective, and how each work with data to reach it.

We explored this question a little further and found the key differences between the four main data professionals: Data Engineer, Data Architect, Data Analyst and Data Scientist.

Below is our graph showing the key differences in responsibilities and a brief summary of the difference between a Data Engineer and Data Scientist. You can find the full article here: https://www.betterbuys.com/bi/co…

Data Engineer: This role is closely related to the Data Architect. Data Engineers have the same knowledge about the inner workings of databases as Data Architects, but they use it to develop and maintain the data architecture that makes the data accessible and ready for analysis.

Data Scientist: A Data Scientist’s mission is similar to that of a Data Analyst’s: find actionable insights that are key to a company’s growth and decision-making. However, a Data Scientist role is needed when a company’s data volume and velocity exceeds a certain level that requires more robust skills to sort through. A Data Scientist wades through unstructured data (big data) to identify questions and pull out critical information.
